Film composers Caitlin Yeo and John Gray have co-composed works that fuse cinematic musical conventions with ideas of minimalism and post-rock. They aim to develop these works further with a selection of Sydney’s pre-eminent musicians to create Klang and record the ensemble’s debut CD.

‘Klang’ is a project in which John and Caitlin are developing and nurturing their compositional voices outside the medium of film. Caitlin is an accomplished accordionist and flautist, whilst John is an exceptional pianist. As their development as musicians is integral to the principles of Klang, both composers will perform as key instrumentalists on the album.

In collaboration with violinist Lara Goodridge and tabla player Bobby Singh, they aim to fuse western and non-western instrumentation and explore cinematic musical conventions of ‘leitmotif’ (i.e. using a recurring short melodic theme to dramatise the piece) outside the boundaries of film.

Through Klang, John and Caitlin will bring notions of film music into the Australian live music domain.
